BAföG + Co.

Studying is almost a full-time job, which usually leaves little time for extra income. With the monthly costs for rent, food, transportation, communication, books, study materials, semester fees, free time, etc., it can quickly add up and it is advisable to think about financing early on.

The Studierendenwerk is happy to help - whether with questions about BAföG or advice on other financial support options.

Via our BAföG-Service-Center you can conveniently take care of all BAföG-related formalities online. In addition to BAföG, there are other financial support options that can be considered independently or as a supplement to BAföG.

Food + Drink

The Studierendenwerk's award-winning campus dining services offer healthy, well-balanced meals at a socially acceptable price. We focus on freshness and taste - both in the "classic" cafeteria, where menus are cooked using mainly regional ingredients, and in our cafes, where you can choose from a wide selection of snacks and drinks.

By the way, you can pay everywhere with your student ID. It's best to register for the cashless Autoload system right away:

An overview of all operating hours can be found at:

The approximately 3,000 student rooms of the Studierendenwerk, which are close to the universities and are affordable, are spread over 15 residences, each with its own character. The choice is diverse and ranges from shared flats to single-room apartments with kitchenette and bathroom. We recommend that you start by applying online for one of the rooms in our residences. Should we no longer have any available rooms, as an alternative to this we offer a private accommodations list online.

Registration with the city
Anyone newly moving to Mannheim must register with Bürgerdienste in K 7 within two weeks. Registration forms can be found at: → keyword "Anmeldung Wohnsitz". Note: Since 2018, Mannheim has had a secondary residence tax. Further information is available from the city.

Broadcast fee
The fee is mandatory for all residents. The monthly fee is 18.36 EUR. This is charged per flat or apartment, regardless of the number of residents. Tip: Recipients of social benefits and BAföG can be exempted from the obligation to pay the contribution.

In many cases, international students are unfamiliar with the new city or country they have just arrived in - often without any family or friends. The orientation in a new city as well as the facing of new norms and different lifestyles is a big challenge for any new student. The coordination office, located in the Mensaria am Schloss building, offers international students an opportunity to ask questions and receive support with everyday challenges in an open, accessible way.
