The child supplement is a supplementary benefit to child benefit. Child supplement is only paid for children who live in the household of the entitled person and who are entitled to child benefit. Child supplement is available for families with insufficient income.
Parents are entitled to the child supplement for their children under the age of 25 if:
Attention:
Parents who only receive ALG II or social benefits or social assistance and have no other income do not receive the child supplement.
Families whose needs are covered by the payment of child supplement and possibly housing allowance and who are therefore not entitled to ALG II can receive the supplement. In the child supplement calculation, child allowance and housing allowance do not count as income, because they fulfill an earmark (different the calculation of unemployment benefit II).
But:
In the case of the child supplement, parental allowance above the minimum amount of 300.00 euros is considered as income.
Per month, the supplement amounts to a maximum of 250.00 euros per child as of January 2023. The supplement is reduced if the income and assets of the child and parents are too high. Entitlement to the child supplement does not apply if the income covers the entire family needs.
In addition to income, the individual calculation also takes into account the family size, the age of the children and the housing costs incurred.
The child supplement is only paid out upon application. The application should be submitted early, because it is not granted retroactively. It can be submitted online at the family office of the Federal Employment Agency.
